Happy Diwali

HAPPY DIWALI

Diwali, The Festival of Light, is probably India’s most internationally renowned holiday. Every year Hindu families around the world celebrate Diwali (also known as Tihar or Deepawali and various other names), and light lanterns in their homes in recognition of the triumph of ‘light’ over ‘darkness’. It is a festival of joy and happiness, and certainly a highlight in the JPP calendar!

Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate, and decorate their homes. On Diwali night, people dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home, participate in family puja (prayers) typically to Lakshmi – the goddess of fertility and prosperity. After puja, fireworks follow, then a family feast including mithai (sweets), and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends.

Every year, all of the kids at JPP get a special Diwali dress for the festivities. It is a real treat for them to be able to dress up in a brand new, colourful outfit and immerse themselves in this fabulous and unique tradition. It may seem like a small thing, but without your support, Diwali would look very different for our kids, and so we are extremely grateful for all of your generous donations. They make all of the difference.

Below are some pictures that Vandana sent us of the kids getting their Diwali dresses.
